Rotary Club President Finds Surprise in Colombia
by Renee Brouse published in January 2012 Sherwood Gazette
Service Above Self is the Rotary motto that inspires each of us to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards and promote good will and peace in the world. I am a Rotarian because it allows me to serve others in a capacity beyond my every day job. In November I had the opportunity to travel to La Plata, Colombia. I went expecting to be able to impact the community there. I walked away a week later feeling impacted by their kindness, generosity and willingness to serve their community.
The Rotary Club of La Plata has twenty-five members, all of whom are Paul Harris Fellows and believe in the mission of Rotary. They have made a huge impact on their community. They have purchased land for a primary school and a university. They have built a home for seniors and a home for a family with a child receiving dialysis, making it easier for them to be in town rather than traveling down out of the mountains for treatment. They are a truly happy people who want to share their hospitality, their love and compassion with all they meet. It was an eye opener for me as an American where we have wealth and are driven for more to make us happy. The idea of service runs deep within these people. They see a need and they fill it despite poverty conditions.
I see an opportunity for the Rotary Club of Sherwood to partner with the Rotary Club of La Plata for an even greater impact. There is a park in a barrio that, to date is only partially completed. This park will serve the kids in the area. It will provide these children with opportunities to play in a safe area, keeping them active and happy. It will give parents a place to feel safe with their children. It will give the community something to be proud of.
I left Colombia with much more than I took with me this time. I look forward to the future and taking more people to Colombia to build the park. I look forward to the opportunity to give back to this community that has given me so much to think about. I look forward to sharing their willingness to live in the moment and be happy with the life they have with others as I share my experience. I look forward to making a difference, knowing they have made a difference for me. I look forward to turning this experience into an opportunity. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference, please talk to me. I just might be able to find you one or two. I hope the New Year brings many opportunities your direction and you have the courage to follow them. Happy New Year!
