Rotary Youth Exchange

Do you want to be an Exchange Student or Host Family?

Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people?  Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year worldwide.  By sharing their own culture and embracing a new one, teen students can help foster global understanding and learn a great deal about themselves in the process.

What is Rotary Youth Exchange?

Rotary Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks in a summer to a full year as an international exchange student hosted by local Rotary clubs. Our local Rotary District 5100 currently arranges exchanges with over 20 countries, including Italy, Germany, Mexico, Chile, India, Austria, Finland, Brazil, Argentina, Denmark, Japan, France, Taiwan, Russia, Belgium, Switzerland, South Korea, Thailand, Columbia, Slovakia, Czech Republic…and more! Is an exchange right for me or my son or daughter?

Exchanges are for people ages 15-18 who:

  • Are typically a junior and should apply as a freshman; the sophomore year is spent preparing
  • Are demonstrated leaders in their school and community
  • Are flexible and willing to try new things
  • Are open to cultural differences
  • Are able to serve as a student ambassador for their own country

How much does it cost?

Costs vary from country to country.  Local Rotary clubs generously host students and provide room and board with host families and a small monthly stipend.  Participants are generally responsible for round-trip airfare, international health insurance, travel documents (such as passports and visas) and spending money, additional travel money, and optional tour fees.

What is the time line for applying to be an exchange student?

Applications are due by September 15th, 2017 for the 2018/2019 school year. Interviews with occur shortly thereafter. Preparations and trainings begin in early October 2017 and run until departure sometime from July to September depending on the country.

Can I host an exchange student?

Yes!  Hosting and exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding experience for your family, providing an international experience without leaving home.  Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community and cultural activities.
